Three players scored two goals each as the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones shut out Unicoi County on Tuesday evening at Citizens Bank Stadium in girls soccer action. Juniors Izzy Lewis and Camdyn Garland, along with sophomore Isla Grindstaff, each netted two goals in the Cyclones’ 6-0 conference victory.
“That’s what we are striving for,” Lady Cyclones head coach Lauren Meier said. “Working together as a team, playing together as a team when we are out there on the field. I think it is starting to click. It is starting to come together in this game, and we did a good job connecting passes.”
Garland scored in the second minute after receiving a cross from Lewis and firing it past Lady Blue Devils goalkeeper Zoe McCurry for a one-goal lead. Lewis added another in the third minute when the Blue Devils’ defense failed to clear a ball in the penalty area. She capitalized on the loose ball, shooting past McCurry for a two-goal EHS (5-3 overall, 2-1 conference) advantage.
In the ninth minute, Garland struck again, following a shot from senior Savanna Smith to give the Cyclones a 3-0 lead at halftime. Unicoi County managed just one shot on goal, a low attempt from Addisen Edwards, which EHS goalkeeper Abbie Krawcyzk saved with a diving stop.
In the second half, the Cyclones maintained their pressure with crisp passing, building on their three-goal lead. Grindstaff scored in the 46th minute to make it 4-0. Lewis followed with her second goal in the 54th minute, and Grindstaff capped the scoring in the 65th minute.
“Abbie had a great game; she handled everything sent her way,” Meier said. “Unicoi County never gave up and played hard until the end. They came here to play, and it is tough for them having to play all their games on the road.”
