On Wednesday at TVA Credit Union Ballpark, the Cyclones (0-3) handed out eight walks and committed four costly errors in an 11-1 mercy-rule loss to the Red Wings of Providence Academy in East Tennessee High School baseball action.
Left-hander Noah Lawson pitched well for the Wings surrendering just two hits while striking out two and walking two.
“After coming here from Virginia I had my junior season wiped out,” Lawson said. “So getting to play in this league is great. I worked my changeup a lot, got a lot of ground balls.
“I got ahead of the hitters and my teammates backed me up with a good defense. The whole team played well as a team today. This is the best game we have played so far and we want to keep it going.”
The Red Wings (2-3) got a run in the top of the first with a walk to Josh Marmo to lead things off. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second and an infield error allowed him to score for a 1-0 lead.
The Cyclones got that run back when catcher Gage Treadway was plunked. He stole second and came around on an RBI single from Nick Stevens.
That was the highlight for the Cyclones who would manage just one more hit the rest of the way.
In the second frame Cyclone starter Peyton Johnson gave up five walks – twice loading the bases – and the Red Wings got just one RBI hit – that from Daniel Lawson – but tallied five runs in the stanza for a 6-1 lead.
Jonah Hubbard pitched a scoreless third frame and Wesley Shankles came on in the fourth frame and did not allow a run. The Cyclones lost a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third after a one-out single from Jaden Anderson.
With Anderson on first base, Treadway hit a line drive to second and Anderson was doubled up as he was running on the play.
In the fifth frame, an infield error to open the inning opened the floodgates for the Red Wings who got hits from Hayden York and an RBI single from Mabry Runnells.
A walk loaded the bases and two wild pitches brought home runs before Drew Niebauer’s RBI single made it a 10-run lead at 11-1.
