Junior Izzy Lewis scored in the 63rd minute to give the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones a 1-0 victory over David Crockett on Tuesday evening at Citizens Bank Stadium in girls’ soccer action.

Lewis knocked home a rebound of a shot from freshman Vella Nave past Lady Pioneers goalkeeper Alli Orren. EHS junior goalkeeper Abbie Krawcyzk stopped a bullet free kick from the 10-yard line with no time remaining to preserve the win.

“Abbie is amazing; she positions herself very well, and that keeps her in good shape for stops,” Lewis said. “I was at the right place at the right time. I saw Vella going for it, and I just moved into position. I think in the first half, we were asleep a little bit, but we got our act together and started connecting passes better.”

David Crockett outshot the Cyclones 4-3 in the first half, with neither team having an exceptional scoring opportunity, as both keepers made saves on every shot taken. Sophomore Maddix Morton was shown a yellow card in the 20th minute of the first half, and Savannah Smith received one in the 36th minute.

The second half opened with Krawcyzk making a fine stop on a free kick from Emma Annett from 30 yards out, which came in high. Annett put a shot on goal off a corner kick a few minutes later as Crockett moved the ball well and defended well.

EHS (3-2 overall) got a good shot from Camdyn Garland, but Orren turned it away while sprawling on the turf. In the 63rd minute, however, Lewis positioned herself near the left post of the goal frame and was in perfect position for the rebound that Orren let get away from a high shot from Nave, firing it into the net.

“We talked about a change going into the second half,” Lady Cyclones head coach Lauren Meier said. “We definitely needed a better mindset and more intensity. We made those adjustments, and Izzy made her move to the net at the right time and scored a beautiful goal. All in all, we were much better in the second half.”
