Senior Piper Helle was celebrated for her accomplishments, and senior Brea Hicks was crowned sweetheart of the senior class, as the Hampton Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs each took conference victories over Happy Valley at Hampton Elementary on Friday night.
The Bulldogs took a 65-54 victory, while the Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 54-27 win.
Helle’s career accomplishments include 1,000 career points, 500-plus assists, 500-plus steals, and 250 rebounds in a career that has seen playoff wins in each season and a trip to the Class 2A championship, where the Lady Dogs fell in the semifinal.
“I think my greatest accomplishment is just winning with this team and being a leader,” Helle said. “I feel good about what I have done here, and I hope we can take this to a conference championship and more.”
The Bulldogs (16-7, 7-1 conference) were surprised in the first half as Happy Valley took a 16-9 first-period lead and a 22-20 halftime advantage. The Warriors led 22-12 before Hampton went on an 8-0 run to close the first half.
The ‘Dogs opened the third period with another 8-0 run to take a 28-22 advantage before a bucket from Ron Paul Parker stopped the bleeding for HV.
“We were shooting too quickly in the first half,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “The kids stepped up in the second half. Jaden Nave gave us a big lift in the third quarter, and we settled down and got open looks.”
Sophomore Chase Davenport had a frustrating first half, shooting just 2-for-10 from the floor, including 0-for-6 from 3-point range, and had just four points going into the break. He rebounded and scored 18 second-half points to finish with a game-high 22 points.
“I don’t think we were ready to play in the first half,” Davenport said. “Coach gave us a little talk at halftime, and we stopped rushing our shots.”
Senior post Jaden Nave scored all 13 of his points in the third quarter as the ‘Dogs scored 31 points in the period to take a 51-32 lead into the fourth quarter. Parker finished with 11 points to lead the Warriors, with Austin Nickles adding nine points.
