For one half, the Happy Valley Warriors kept pace with Chuckey-Doak on Tuesday at Bayless Gymnasium, trailing by just six at the half. The third quarter was a disaster for HV (2-18, 1-7 conference), as the Black Knights went on a 14-2 run to take a 52-34 lead going into the fourth period, and the Knights prevailed 62-55 in boys conference basketball action.

In girls action, the Lady Warriors (6-14, 0-6) were a turnover machine and shot poorly as C-D took a 55-28 victory.

Post Austin Nickles scored a team-high 16 points, with 14 of those coming in the first half as he helped the Warriors stay within shouting distance of the Knights. HV led 12-11 after one quarter, but C-D outscored HV 18-11 in the second period to take a 29-23 halftime advantage.

“I was proud of the effort, but our inability to score the ball at times really puts us behind the eight ball, honestly,” Warriors head coach Shane Williams said. “We played good in spurts, but Chuckey-Doak played better than us for more of the game than we did.”

The Knights (6-14, 1-5 conference) outscored HV 23-11, including opening with a 14-2 run, and that led to an 18-point C-D advantage. The Warriors battled gamely in the fourth quarter, actually cutting the C-D lead to 59-51 with 1:32 remaining in regulation. HV made it 61-55 with 47 ticks left on the clock, but that was as close as the Warriors would get.

Artie Bahn scored 12 points for HV, with Ron Paul Parker adding 11. For C-D, Gavin Crum’s 19 points were tops, with Dominique Atchison adding 15 and Ryland Grindstaff pitching in with 12.
