Poor shooting from Happy Valley and strong defense from Hampton saw the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs each score a non-conference win over Happy Valley on Thursday night at Bayless Gymnasium.
Sophomore Chase Davenport scored a game-high 26 points as the Bulldogs took an 80-33 decision over the Warriors, while the girls took advantage of a poor shooting night by the Lady Warriors in a 49-15 victory.
“We played well; the girls got 16 steals,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Dewayne Humphrey said. “We attacked the ball in the air, and Allie (Birchfield) took down seven boards and proved to be a big presence in the middle.”
The Lady Bulldogs ran off and hid in the first period, opening a 19-3 first-quarter lead with guard Brea Hicks scoring eight of her 10 points in the stanza. Hampton (14-4 overall) took a 32-9 halftime advantage, with Happy Valley shooting 4-for-21 (19 percent) from the floor in the half.
Happy Valley was never able to put a run together, and the Bulldogs took a 46-13 lead into the fourth quarter.
Junior Hannah Smith’s 11 points led all scorers in this game, with senior point guard Piper Helle adding nine.

It was all Bulldogs in this one, as they opened with a 25-2 first-period lead. With the score tied 2-2, Hampton went on a 23-point run that carried over to the second quarter before a free throw from Zachary Rose ended the streak at 26 points.
Hampton (12-4 overall) took a 43-11 halftime lead before Happy Valley finally got some offense going, with guard Artee Bahn hitting a pair of three-pointers en route to a team-high 11 points. For Happy Valley, the scoring spree was too little, too late, as the Bulldogs opened up a 70-29 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
“As a team, we had 37 assists, and we moved the ball very well on our breaks,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “We transitioned from defense to offense and shared the ball well. This is a tight-knit group of kids.”
