County Commission honors Taylor by naming a new bridge in his honor

The Carter County Commission recently approved a resolution naming a new bridge spanning Stoney Creek on Hodge Branch Road as the J.N. Taylor Memorial Bridge.
Also, the commission approved a resolution recognizing May 22 of this year as J.N. Taylor Day.
According to the resolution passed by the commission, Taylor was a retired Stoney Creek farmer who spent time in the fields raising acres of green beans, corn, and tobacco. He also owned and operated a grocery store in the Stoney Creek community for many years. “He would let customers charge their groceries and pay when they could. He gave gifts of food and clothes to many people during his life,” read the resolution.
During World War II, Taylor served in the U.S. Army. He served in Company B, 1636th Engineer Construction Battalion. During his time in the military he served in Japan, France, Germany, and the Panama Canal. He earned the nickname “Candyman’ by giving treats to the many children he encountered during his time in the military.
Taylor was a member of Moore’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and seldom missed a service. He served as a Sunday School teacher and Sunday School superintendent.
The Stoney Creek bridge is one of several bridge projects underway or getting ready to start in Carter County according to Roger Colbaugh, Carter County Supt. of Roads.
