NASHVILLE – Gas prices in Tennessee rose by an average of four cents over the past week, bringing the state average to $2.80 per gallon. The price is five cents higher than a month ago but remains five cents lower than this time last year, according to AAA – The Auto Club Group.

“Gas prices are continuing their roller coaster across the state this week,” said Megan Cooper, AAA spokeswoman. “Despite oil costs easing slightly, we did see a couple of state metro areas’ pump prices increase from last week, which likely helped to drag the state average slightly higher. Drivers can likely expect continued fluctuation across the state in pump pricing as prices continue to normalize after recent shifts in crude oil pricing.”

Nationally, the average price of gas dipped three cents to $3.09 per gallon due to easing oil costs and moderate domestic demand. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported an increase in gasoline demand and a rise in domestic gasoline stocks, while gasoline production declined to an average of 9.2 million barrels per day.

Tennessee Metro Prices

  • Most expensive: Johnson City ($2.87), Nashville ($2.83), Knoxville ($2.82)
  • Least expensive: Clarksville ($2.72), Chattanooga ($2.72), Memphis ($2.78)

Oil market dynamics also played a role in price changes, with crude oil inventories increasing by 3.5 million barrels last week, bringing total U.S. crude stockpiles to 415.1 million barrels—about 6% below the five-year average.
