East Tennessee State University’s three award-winning concert choirs are set to perform in their final concert of the academic year. 

The concert, titled “Love and Loathing,” is set for Friday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the ETSU Martin Center for the Arts. The music explores the range of human emotions.  

“This exciting concert, featuring both individual and joint performances, explores complex emotions,” said Dr. Alan Stevens, chair of the Department of Music. “Get tickets while you can, as this finale performance always proves popular.”  

Three groups are set to perform.   

ETSU Chorale, under the direction of Stevens, has toured throughout the United States and internationally. Students are selected through an intense audition process that reflects their commitment to choral artistry.   

BucsWorth tenor bass choir, formed more than 30 years ago in 1989, performs a variety of music under the direction of Dr. Lauren Ramey, associate director of choral activities. 

East Tennessee Belles, conducted by Kathryn May and Dr. Matthew Potterton, is regularly recognized as an outstanding soprano alto choir. They have performed for the Tennessee Music Education Association and other regional events.   

The concert will feature a collaboration with the Sing Me A Story Foundation, a group that gives children the opportunity to write/illustrate stories about anything they want. The stories are then given to student songwriters and musicians who turn them into songs or choral works. The mission of the Sing Me A Story Foundation is to serve children and families in need by providing them with an imaginative outlet translated into music. ETSU composition student Julian Rios set a child’s story to music and the piece will be premiered by the Chorale during the concert. The child and the family will be a part of the concert as well.  

The Department of Music is an incredible source of creative energy in the Appalachian Highlands, and the ETSU campus is buzzing with activity in April.
