The Tennessee Highway Patrol has identified the individual killed in a two-car collision in Carter County on Monday afternoon as a 40-year-old Butler woman.
Shortly after 3 p.m. on Monday, the Tennessee Highway Patrol was called to Highway 321 near the intersection with Little Stoney Creek Road on a report of a motor vehicle accident with a fatality.
THP officials have identified the person who died in the crash as Marsha R. Shepherd, 40, of Butler.
According to a preliminary report on the accident by THP Trooper Chris Dunn, Shepherd was driving a 2005 Dodge Neon southbound on Highway 321 when she crossed the center line in a curve and struck a Toyota Camry head on. The driver of the Camry, who was identified as 75-year-old Thomas Fortune, of Mountain City, was injured in the crash. No information was immediately available on his condition.
Both the southbound and northbound lanes of Highway 321 were shut down as emergency crews worked to clear the scene and investigate the crash. The road was closed for a few hours.
Motorists were being turned around at the Watauga Point Recreation Area. Some were parking to wait for the road to be reopened while others left to look for alternate routes.
