Nancy Karen Merritt, beloved wife, mom and grandma, passed on to her heavenly home on May 1, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was 73. She was born Sept. 30, 1951, to the late Chester and Blanche Johnson of Elizabethton. She is a 1969 graduate of Happy Valley High School, where she met the love of her life, Larry Merritt.
Nancy worked for many years at Johnson City Medical Center before retiring to care for her mother. Nancy loved her family. Following the birth of her first grandson, she devoted herself to becoming an “on-call” grandma, loving and celebrating her children and grandchildren at every milestone in their lives. She loved celebrating birthdays and holidays, especially Christmas, being at the center of her family.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 57 years, Larry Steve Merritt; three children, Diane (Charles) Dugger, Mike (Mitzi) Merritt and Kenneth (Kelly) Merritt; six grandchildren, Adam Dugger, Katie Merritt, Ellie Dugger, Clayton Merritt, Karie Merritt and Grayson Merritt; her special lunchtime friends, her Southside Christian Church family and Salt ‘n Pepper Sunday school class.
Services to honor the life of Nancy Merritt will be at Tetrick Funeral Home on Sunday, May 4, 2025. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by the celebration of life at 7 p.m. conducted by Mr. Michael Koruschak, minister of Southside Christian Church. Nancy will be laid to rest on Monday, May 5, 2025, at Happy Valley Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Nancy’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses of Ballad Health Hospice Care, Dr. Alina Bhat, Dr. Gretchen Bowling, Dr. Denise Sibley and the many extended friends who visited, prepared meals and prayed with Nancy and her family.
