The Elks Lodge on Saturday hosted 75 to 80 kids and their families for its annual Easter egg hunt and pizza party. The Easter Bunny was on hand, and more than 4,000 plastic eggs were scattered on their property at 1000 North Sycamore Street. When the event was over, every kid in attendance went home with bags of eggs, a full belly and smiles on their faces. A number of kids who were lucky enough to get hold of a golden egg received “grand prizes.” In addition, an officer from the Elizabethton Police Department was on hand to serve as a reminder of the lodge’s commitment to the community regarding drug awareness.

Lodge Treasurer Keri Austin-Marcus spoke on how the event fits into what the lodge does: “The Easter egg hunt is one of our big events each year. It is for the community, for all the kids in the community. We give out prizes and grand prizes like bikes and tablets. One of the big things the lodge promotes is drug awareness, and we have a police officer here who is giving out drug awareness packets.” The purpose, as stated on their website, is to invest in the community to help children grow up healthy and drug-free, meet the needs of veterans and improve the quality of life.

Exalted Ruler Eddie Wilson shared that the Elks Lodge’s commitment to the community is multifaceted: “Just look at the kids today. Easter is a big deal. We also have the Trout Tournament coming up in May in Roan Mountain, where 300 kids come together, and this past Halloween, we had 600 kids come through our parking lot. These events help families and neighbors come together,” Wilson said.

During the flood, the Elizabethton Elks Lodge helped more than 11,000 flood victims and donated $1.7 million to the community. To learn more about the Elks Lodge and how you can partner with them, go to www.elks.org or call 423-542-2341.
