Gary Stocton’s name resonates deeply within the history of Cloudland High School athletics. As one of the school’s standout basketball players during the mid-1960s, Gary carved his place among the elite athletes in Carter County. His remarkable achievements on the hardwood, as well as his dedication to the Cloudland community, have earned him a special place in local sports lore, eventually culminating in his induction into the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame.
Gary’s basketball journey at Cloudland began in the 1963-64 season, during his sophomore year. While still developing his skills, he showed early signs of promise, contributing approximately 150 points to the team. This solid foundation would set the stage for the heights he would reach in the years to come.
By his junior year in the 1964-65 season, Gary was emerging as a pivotal player for the Highlanders. His scoring output nearly doubled from the previous year, amassing close to 300 points as Cloudland enjoyed its most successful season to date, posting a 30-4 record. This remarkable feat broke the school record for the most wins in a single season and marked the first time Cloudland secured both a conference and district championship. Gary’s contribution was recognized with an honorable mention in the All-Watauga Conference, while his performance in key moments, such as the District 1 All-Tournament, solidified his reputation as a rising star. These accomplishments were a source of pride for Cloudland, and Gary played an instrumental role in establishing the school’s winning tradition.
The 1965-66 season, Gary’s senior year, proved to be even more monumental for both him and Cloudland basketball. The team reached new heights, finishing with an impressive 29-9 record and claiming a share of the Watauga Conference championship. However, the crowning achievement came when Cloudland qualified for the state tournament for the first time in school history. This feat was a testament to the determination and talent of the team, with Gary serving as one of its leaders.
That season, Gary emerged as the team’s second-leading scorer, averaging 12.6 points per game. While his consistency was critical throughout the year, he also demonstrated an ability to deliver in high-pressure situations. One of the highlights of his career came when he scored a team- and career-high 29 points in a 106-71 victory over Cranberry, a game that remains the highest-scoring performance in Cloudland history. Gary’s contributions were recognized widely, earning him spots on the All-Watauga Conference first teams for both the Elizabethton Star and Johnson City Press-Chronicle, as well as an honorable mention for the All-East Tennessee team. His performances also garnered accolades at the Johnson City Invitational All-Tournament and the Region 1 All-Tournament.
Gary’s athletic capability extended beyond the basketball court. In 1965, he showcased his versatility in track and field, finishing as the runner-up in the mile run at the Watauga Conference championships. He went on to finish third in the mile at the East Tennessee Regional, proving that his competitive spirit and talent were not limited to one sport.
Cloudland’s basketball success during Gary’s era set a foundation for the school’s athletic program, and his contributions have been long remembered. His induction into the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame is a reflection of his lasting impact on the community. Remarkably, Gary is not the only Stocton to receive such an honor. His brother Barry, niece Ashley Stocton Turbyfill, and late brother Roger have all been inducted as well, forming a unique legacy for the Stocton family.
Gary’s life took him beyond the basketball court, as he went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force, exemplifying his dedication to both his country and community. For nearly 60 years, he has shared his life with his wife, Judy, building a life that reflects the same values of loyalty, hard work, and dedication that marked his basketball career.
Gary Stocton’s story is not just one of athletic success but of lasting influence. His contributions to Cloudland High School’s basketball legacy are still celebrated today, and his name remains synonymous with the spirit of the Highlanders. From setting records on the court to serving his country, Gary has left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of witnessing his journey.
