We have been spoiled with mild winters in recent years…but winter really began in December this year with some cold temperatures, and it is now the middle of January and the cold temperatures are hanging on as is the snow which fell over the weekend. Many are winter-weary and are wishing for warmer weather, the return of the robins playing on the lawn and the daffodils poking their heads through the ground.
But, not just yet, as the coldest temperatures of the winter season are forecast for next week when the low will be in the single digits. So, layer up in sweaters, large coats, gloves, and something to keep your head warm.
When temperatures fall, it’s important to remember the “4 Ps’” people, pets, pipes, and plants.
A phone call to friends and family to make sure they’re staying warm can never hurt, especially for the elderly.
When you’re heading outside in cold weather, it’s important to stay warm. Wind can make it feel even colder, and frostbite and hypothermia may occur if skin is left exposed. So, dress to stay warm.
Pipes are especially vulnerable to cold weather. When temperatures fall, there’s a potential for water in your pipes to freeze, which can lead to a burst pipe.
Consider dripping your faucets and leaving cabinets open to allow the heat from your home to keep the pipes warm.
If you have an outdoor spigot, stop by your local hardware store to pick up a cold weather cover. They’re usually only a couple of dollars.
Since we’re now out of the growing season, plants are not as big of a concern in cold weather. However, if you still have any plants, you may want to consider bringing them inside or covering them with a plastic bag to help them stay warm.
And, in times of cold weather, it’s especially important to remember those furry friends. If you’re cold, they are too! Bring pets in for the night or make sure they have a heated area to shelter in.
Winter can be costly just trying to stay warm. Here are some tips to save even a little bit of money without freezing from the Elizabethton Electric Department.
– Adjust your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower and bundle up in a cozy sweater, warm socks or a blanket.
– Set your water heater’s temperature at 120° F.
– Keep your garage door closed to buffer colder outdoor air from trickling into your home.
– Use exhaust fans sparingly to avoid pulling extra warm air out of your home.
– Open your curtains or blinds on south-facing windows during the day to allow natural sunlight to heat your home.
– If you haven’t already, add weather-stripping or caulk around leaky windows and doors. Block drafts with tight-fitting, insulating drapes or shades.
– Replace your air filter and schedule routine maintenance regularly so your heating system runs safely and efficiently.
– Keep the fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning.
Let’s face it – being cold in the winter is no fun.
While cooling off when it’s too hot is relatively simple, warming up once you’re chilled can feel impossible. Preparing your home for extreme cold not only keeps you warm but also helps save on energy bills.
