It’s a new year, and East Tennessee State University is gearing up for the start of the spring semester, with plenty of activities for students and the community to enjoy in January!
The following listing includes events that are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted:
Music
Guest Artist Recital: Latitude 49
January 17, 7:30 p.m. – Powell Recital Hall, Martin Center for the Arts
Latitude 49 blends the finesse of a classical ensemble with the drive and precision of a finely tuned rock band.
ETSU Honor Band Festival Concert
January 25, 5 p.m. – ETSU Foundation Grand Hall, Martin Center for the Arts
Students in the ETSU High School Honor Band will perform in the closing concert of the 45th annual festival, which features two days of master classes and rehearsals led by ETSU and visiting music faculty.
The Black Jacket Symphony Presents The Beatles’ ‘Abbey Road’
January 30, 7:30 p.m. – ETSU Foundation Grand Hall, Martin Center for the Arts
The Black Jacket Symphony recreates The Beatles’ iconic album “Abbey Road” live in its entirety, note for note, sound for sound. It’s a full night of rock and roll magic, plus a visual experience unlike any other. Tickets range from $32.50-$40, plus tax and fees.
Faculty Recital: Christian Swafford, Percussion
January 31, 7:30 p.m. – Powell Recital Hall, Martin Center for the Arts
Dr. Christian Swafford, a visiting assistant professor of percussion in ETSU’s Department of Music, will perform in recital.
Theater/Cinema
January 27 and 28, 7 p.m. – ETSU Foundation Grand Hall, Martin Center for the Arts
This stage adaptation of one of Hollywood’s most beloved romantic stories springs to life with a powerhouse creative team led by two-time Tony Award®-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, an original score by Grammy® winner Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, and a book by the movie’s director Garry Marshall and screenwriter J.F. Lawton. Tickets are $72.50-$92.50 plus fees.
Fine Arts
‘Stitch Together: The Social Seamstress in Southern Appalachia’
Continuing through January 10, 2025, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday – Reece Museum
The Reece Museum hosts this exhibit exploring the social connections of seamstresses by showcasing the fashion and clothing of the museum’s permanent collection.
Public Talks and More
‘CHATS: Connecting Humans and Telling Stories: An Overview’
January 9, noon – Via Zoom
At the heart of helping others recover from life’s difficulties is the ability to have authentic connections with others. In this lunchtime talk in the ETSU/Ballad Health Strong BRAIN Institute Resilience Presentation Series, participants will learn about the CHAT program’s work and how to become part of this growing effort. Registration is required to obtain Zoom link.
January 13, 11:30 a.m. – ETSU Foundation Carillon and Alumni Plaza
This annual program commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., reflecting on the prominent civil rights leader’s efforts in developing the “Beloved Community.”
