The Carter County Emergency Management Agency issued an alert just after 7 p.m. warning of flooding in the Roan Mountain and Elk Mills communities.
The Carter County Highway Department said recent rainfall and incoming weather conditions have resulted in county roads, earlier damaged by Tropical Storm Helene, being redamaged and experiencing standing water.
“Due to incoming weather and past rain, the county is experiencing flooding in the Roan Mountain and Elk Mills communities,” the alert said.
Earlier in the day, a social media post stated that Carter County public safety officials were watching bridge conditions in the Elk Mills/Poga area.
“As of 4 p.m. today, we are monitoring the bridges in the Elk Mills/Poga area,” Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley said in a post on the sheriff’s office Facebook page. “Officers are advising that the lower bridge (Bridge 1) currently has water just over it, but are confident that they can cross if an emergency arises. The upper temporary bridge (Bridge 2) is still standing; however, the road to it is washing out, causing concern to us if we need to reach citizens.”
The post is accompanied by three photos showing the state of the bridges.
“Carter County Road Superintendent Shannon Burchett has been working with us to come up with a solution,” Fraley said. “We will make sure that all citizens are safe and have access to emergency services if needed. Updates will be given as soon as we can.”
