JOHNSON CITY – On Monday, the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) celebrated the remarkable career of K9 Pico, a dedicated four-legged officer who served with unmatched grit for seven years – that’s 49 in dog years.
K9 Pico’s career stats are nothing short of extraordinary. During his tenure with the JCPD, Pico sniffed out more than 175 pounds of marijuana, 125 pounds of methamphetamine, over 50,000 pressed pills, 5 pounds of crack/cocaine, and 1 pound of heroin. His work contributed to the seizure of more than $1.1 million in cash connected to illegal activity and the recovery of more than 85 firearms from the streets.
This determined K9 logged over 10 surrenders and three physical apprehensions of suspects, showcasing the paw-sitive impact just one K9 team can have in combating crime in the community.
On his final day, Pico conducted his last free-air sniff – a fitting end to a career spent with his nose to the ground in the pursuit of justice. Following his successful sniff, JCPD officers and City employees celebrated Pico’s service with one of his favorite rewards: tennis balls. Pico also enjoyed some pup-approved sweet treats.
The JCPD expressed their gratitude for Pico’s service and dedication to the community.
“Job well done, Pico. The Department thanks you for your service,” a spokesperson said.
Looking to the future, the JCPD is preparing to welcome a new K9 officer to its K9 Unit soon.
