‘Horns storm past Cloudland in 25-point win

The Johnson Co. Longhorns were looking to dish out a little dose of revenge against the Cloudland Highlanders after the visitors took the opening girls’ game.

Coach Austin Atwood’s squad ensured a split as the ‘Horns handily dealt the Highlanders an 83-58 defeat.

The home team built a healthy 14-point lead by intermission, taking a 41-27 lead into the locker room.

Darren Chappell had some fire in his shooting hand as he led Johnson Co. with 13 points in the first half. Carter Atwood also shouldered a lion’s share of the work with 12 points, including a pair of deep treys.

Cloudland head coach Cody McClain saw Cooper Smith try his best to keep the Highlanders in contention as Smith led the team in first-half scoring with 11 points. Uriah Jarrett added seven points, while Kingston Cole tallied four points.

It just wasn’t the Highlanders’ night, as Atwood and Chappell reloaded at halftime and came out of the break to put the game away.

Atwood hit three treys in the second half on his way to a game-high 24 points. Chappell followed closely, adding 22 points.

Eli Tester and Landon Lipford played contributing roles for the Longhorns, scoring 10 and nine points, respectively.

Carson Jenning (7), Hunter Paisley (3), Chris Wilson (3), Ethan Smith (3), and Kyle Maple (2) closed out the scoring ledger for Johnson Co.

Meanwhile, Jarrett caught fire in the second half for the ‘Landers, finishing with a team-high 19 points.

Smith finished with 16 points after his first-half burst. Cole tallied nine points, while Bryce Birchfield and Nick Caraway each dropped in five points. Gavin Shell closed out his night with three points, and Devin Balado hit 1-of-4 from the free-throw line to finish with one point.
