JOHNSON CITY – The Salvation Army kicks off its 2024 Red Kettle Campaign on Friday, Nov. 8, to support its mission in Carter, Greene, Unicoi, and Washington counties. Running through Dec. 24, the campaign relies on community volunteers to ensure a successful and enjoyable holiday fundraising effort, allowing The Salvation Army to provide year-round support to neighbors in need.

Organized groups, individuals, couples, and friends are encouraged to participate. “We encourage groups, businesses, and churches to commit to ringing for a day or more at a location that suits them,” said Major Maureen Diffley, Johnson City corps officer. “It’s a fun way to build camaraderie during the holiday season. You can dress up, sing carols, greet people, and make a difference at the same time.”

Group leaders are urged to contact The Salvation Army’s volunteer coordinator, Olivia Brokaw, or Major R.C. Duskin to secure the best location, day, and time.

“We also benefit from many committed individuals who ring by themselves or with a friend or partner, either once or on a repeated basis,” added Major Diffley. “In one of my previous appointments, a lot of retired couples enjoyed ringing together as a ‘day date.’ One of the cutest couples even dressed as elves, though that’s not required!”

Volunteers can sign up by connecting with the volunteer coordinator or registering online at www.registertoring.com. After choosing to ring as an individual or group, volunteers can enter “Johnson City” as their location preference.

Additionally, The Salvation Army is hiring a limited number of seasonal workers to ring bells. Interested applicants can visit the office at 204 West Walnut Street on Mondays, 10 a.m. – noon, or Wednesdays, 1-3 p.m., with the necessary documents to complete an I-9. For alternative times, call to make an appointment.
