JOHNSON CITY – Hampton’s up-and-down season hit rock bottom Friday night at ETSU’s William B. Greene Jr. Stadium in the Clash for Compassion with a 36-20 loss to Eagleton Academy.
The Bulldogs (3-5 overall, 2-2 conference) finish the season next Friday at South Greene, looking to secure fourth place in Region 1-2A and a road playoff game, most likely against York Institute.
Hampton’s first drive looked promising as they advanced from their own 44-yard line to the Royals’ 24, but an incomplete fourth-down pass led to a turnover on downs. The Royals (5-4 overall, 2-2 conference) answered with a seven-play scoring drive, capped by quarterback Nathan Clemmer’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Lane Cope for an early 8-0 lead.
Hampton responded with a five-play drive, with senior running back Dominique Burleson scoring on a 40-yard run to make it an 8-6 game after the two-point conversion attempt failed. On the ensuing kickoff, Wyott Matossian’s 87-yard return extended the Royals’ lead to 15-6.
On that play, junior quarterback Maddux Wilson suffered a leg injury and did not return, forcing Hampton to switch to a Wildcat formation with Burleson at quarterback.
The Bulldogs then orchestrated a 57-yard drive that ended with a 17-yard touchdown run by Burleson, narrowing the Royals’ lead to 15-12 at the seven-minute mark of the second quarter. Hampton attempted an onside kick, successfully recovering, but penalties stalled the drive, and the Bulldogs were forced to punt.
Pinned at their own five-yard line, the Royals put together a 12-play, 95-yard drive, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Clemmer to junior tight end Tyson Click, extending their lead to 22-12.
Eagleton held that lead going into halftime, and on the opening drive of the third quarter, Clemmer scored on a 46-yard run, pushing the Royals’ lead to 29-12. The Bulldogs responded with a seven-yard touchdown run from Burleson, followed by his successful two-point conversion, making it a 29-20 game.
Eagleton then put together an 11-play, 57-yard scoring drive, with Colton Relation scoring on a 16-yard run. The Bulldogs’ final two drives ended on downs, allowing Eagleton to run out the clock.
Burleson finished with 219 rushing yards on 37 carries. For Eagleton, Relation rushed for 159 yards on 16 attempts, while Clemmer rushed for 92 yards and completed 8-of-12 passes for 117 yards.
