Main Street Elizabethton’s 2024 Scarecrow Contest is underway, transforming downtown into a festive display of creativity. The contest, which began on September 16, runs through October 27 and is free for all community members to enter. First, second, and third-place ribbons will be awarded, with winners decided by public online voting. The results will be announced on October 28, and all scarecrow displays are required to remain up through November 1 to celebrate the Halloween season.
Businesses and community members alike have embraced the contest, with displays popping up throughout the downtown district. Farm Supply offered straw delivery to downtown businesses on September 13 to help with setup. For cleanup, the Chamber and the Elizabethton Farmers Market will collect straw on November 2 at 10 a.m. Participants are reminded to remove any decorations and non-organic materials from their displays prior to that time.
Businesses had first priority to claim columns outside their storefronts, with ribbons tied around columns by September 13. Community members were allowed to select their columns starting on September 14. Organizers recommend avoiding perishable items in displays, as the scarecrows will be up for more than 45 days.
All scarecrow displays had to be completed by September 16 to be eligible for judging. Main Street added QR codes to each display to facilitate online voting. The contest guidelines require that displays maintain a safe distance from the street and be weather-resistant to ensure they can withstand the elements throughout the contest duration.
