Carl Edward Gibson, 82, of Elizabethton, died Saturday, October 5, 2024, at his residence. A native of St. Charles, Va., he was a son of the late Homer W. and Mable Phillips Gibson and was born on September 27, 1942. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles, Donald and Otis Gibson, and a sister, Agnes Austin.

Carl graduated from St. Charles High School in St. Charles, Va., in 1961 where he was a football star and received the Sportsmanship Award. After high school, he attended Elizabethton Business School. He served in the Army for three years at the rank of Sergeant and afterwards in the Army Reserves. Carl worked at North American Rayon Corporation and retired from Color Works. He attended Elizabethton Church of Christ.

Carl was a kind, generous, gentle, fun loving and caring man. He was loved by everyone who knew him. His favorite pastime was watching all sports.

Those left to cherish his many memories include his wife of 59 years, Trena Presnell Gibson of the home; sisters, Christine Burleson (Johnny) and Anna Eleanor Burkhart, all of Elizabethton; a brother, Johnny Gibson (Connie) of Roan Mountain; sisters-in-law, Loretta Rainbolt (Ken), June Winters, Norma Babb (David), Pat Montgomery (Clay) and Diana Marlowe (Ralph); a brother-in-law, Dean Presnell (Sandra); a special niece and caretaker, Doris Blevins (Mac); and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. A celebration of life service will follow the visitation at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Mr. Todd Houston and Mr. Dennis Pierce officiating. The graveside service and interment will follow the funeral at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family, friends, and members of Elizabethton Church of Christ.
