Kickers are often the Rodney Dangerfields of football, as they get little respect for the roles they play. However, it was hard not to give respect to Elizabethton Cyclone kicker Caleb Campbell this week, as his strong leg was a weapon for the Cyclones in their contest against Boone.

For that reason, Campbell and quarterback Rhett Slagle have been named the Co-Players of the Week for the Cyclones after their game against Boone.

Campbell has become a threat this season, with his kicking duties consistently resulting in opposing teams starting either close to their own goal line or from the 20-yard line after his kicks land in the end zone for touchbacks. He also added a 41-yard punt against Boone and converted 2-of-2 point-after attempts.

Cyclone quarterback Rhett Slagle is also being recognized for both his arm and legs after leading the Cyclones to a win over Boone at ETSU’s William B. Greene Jr. Stadium.

Slagle completed 9-of-13 passes for 117 yards and two scores, while rushing nine times for 50 yards and a touchdown, totaling 167 yards of offense.

The junior signal caller is a field general for head coach Shawn Witten. He placed two big-time passes into the arms of Justin Whitehead and Zach Wallin, both in the corner of the end zone, where only his receivers could catch the ball.

Congratulations to Caleb Campbell and Rhett Slagle for earning this week’s Player of the Week honor for the Elizabethton Cyclones.
