JOHNSON CITY – The Salvation Army of Johnson City has announced that applications for Angel Tree 2024 will take place this week at Dawn of Hope.

Parents and guardians may request Christmas gifts, including clothes, toys and books for children up to age 17. Tags are created for each child that businesses, civic groups, churches and individuals adopt to provide gifts that are later distributed by The Salvation Army.

Families with children must apply for Christmas assistance in person and bring necessary documents to confirm need and parental or guardian relationships. The requirement to attend a class has been lifted; no classes will be held on September 26 at The Salvation Army. 

“We want to make it easier for families to apply, so we are lifting the requirement to complete a class,” Major Maureen Diffley, corps officer in Johnson City, said. “In addition, the in-person application intake will help us to make good connections with families and ensure that everyone completely fills out their application and can ask any questions that they have to understand how the project works.”

Application intake will take place at Dawn of Hope at 500 East Oakland Avenue in Johnson City on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. til 12 noon.

Parents and guardians must bring all required paperwork with them to the in-person application. It is required to provide government-issued photo identification for the adult, which can be a driver’s license, passport, and/or consulate card.

Evidence of need must be demonstrated: two recent pay stubs, housing voucher, or letters with TANF, WIC, SNAP or SSI awards are acceptable.

Parents and guardians will need to present birth certificates or custody papers and social security card or consulate papers for each child.

The Salvation Army in Johnson City will receive applications from families in Washington, Carter, Unicoi and Greene counties during the in-person application intake this week. There will be no late or online applications.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to help families fulfill their desire to provide holiday magic without imperiling their finances and stability.”
