Fender’s Farm is known locally for creating some fun times in their corn maze this time of year, but it was all business for the Elizabethton girls cross country team as the Lady Cyclones blazed through the 5,000-meter course ahead of nine other teams to collect first place in the Fender’s Farm Cross Country Carnival.
Not only did the EHS girls capture the title, but freshman phenom Vella Nave broke a six-year school record in the event, besting the record set by Lauren Pilkton in the 2018 State Championship.
Nave’s time of 19:39 was 11 seconds faster than Pilkton’s old record — not too shabby for a runner who is only halfway through her freshman campaign.
Two other Lady Cyclones medaled in the event, as Helen Hackett finished with a time of 21:02 to claim sixth place, while Jasey Hyatt’s time of 22:14 was good enough for a 13th-place finish.
Other Lady Cyclone finishers in the event, with their times, were as follows:
22:24.52 — Jane Hackett, 15th
22:46.41 — Adrian Heading, 17th
23:09.84 — Madeline Isaacs, 18th
24:03.12 — Ashleigh Hyatt, 26th
24:53.92 — Madeline Schumann, 39th
25:44.36 — Grace Artz, 49th
26:40.80 — Amberlin Grindstaff, 66th
University School finished second behind the Lady Cyclones, with Morristown West capturing third.
The remaining top 10 were as follows:
David Crockett
Greeneville
Providence Academy
Sullivan East
Dobyns-Bennett
West Ridge
Lenoir City
The Cyclone boys, meanwhile, didn’t fare as well on the course, as Jerry Behrmann had the best time of all male runners, finishing in 12th to collect the only medal for the boys’ squad. Elizabethton finished in eighth place overall.
Behrmann’s finish came on the heels of his return from basic training in the United States Army, as he was competing in his first race since his return.
Other Cyclone runners with their times included:
18:18.66 — William Snodgrass, 17th
19:47.66 — Cooper Jack, 48th
20:14.67 — Louis Trivette, 61st
23:23.75 — Wesley Taylor, 128th
23:42.15 — Joubran El Helou, 133rd
