Members of the first-ever Lady Cyclones volleyball team gathered Monday night at the Elizabethton High School gymnasium to be recognized and to, in turn, recognize their former coach, Vivian Lewis. Members of the 1974-1976 teams came together to fondly remember those early days of not just volleyball at EHS but also basketball and swimming.

With the rise of Title IX, a number of female athletic teams at EHS were either created or received an infusion of support. Led by Coach Lewis, girls began to learn a new sport and terms like spike, dig, and set-up. Those girls not only became a team but also a family. As Coach Lewis became a mother to her first child, she offered encouragement to this new team as it made trips to Happy Valley, Daniel Boone, and other local high schools.

The legacy of Coach Lewis lives on today. Now a grandmother, she still comes to the EHS gym to root for her granddaughters. Marley Lewis was a member of the 2023 Lady Cyclones, and Morgan is on the 2024 Lady Cyclones junior varsity squad. One of the additional accolades for these 1974-75 members was the creation of the only known Lady Cyclones flag football team. Their fond memories and presence Monday night served as a reminder that “Once a Cyclone, always a Cyclone!”

Members in attendance were Robin Bradley, Susan Hathaway, Bonnie Henderson, Karen and Kathy Marshall, Vera Meredith, Dixie Persinger, Shirley Mae Smith, Sequa Sue VanDyke, and Judy Wilson.
