UNICOI – Cherokee National Forest Officials are closing Little Stony Dispersed Camping Area for public health and safety on the Watauga Ranger District on Aug. 30. Signs will be posted and the area patrolled until the campground is cleaned and reopened.

“This behavior is against our eastern Tennessee values and dangerous to humans and wildlife,” said Terence Rose, district ranger, Watauga Ranger District. “A very small few of our visitors unfortunately can cause great harm for everyone. When visiting recreational areas on the forest, please be mindful of others and clean up after yourself.”

The camping area is closing for public health and safety caused by trash and waste that is now increasing bear activity. The Forest Service located dangerous and hazardous objects among the trash that must be cleaned before the area can be reopened.

The Forest Service wants to remind the public about the Leave No Trace principles of disposing waste properly, be considerate of others and help minimize impacts when recreating on national forest land.
