The swarming attack of the Providence Lady Knights seemed to take the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones by surprise on Tuesday evening at Citizens Bank Stadium – it at least had them on their heels in a 3-0 opening game loss.

“Something we are working on is trying to build our attack,” Lady Cyclones head coach Lauren Meier said. “And I think we are getting there and as we get more game experience I think it’s going to click.”

The Knights had the control of the match early, dominating possession and firing several dangerous shots at EHS goalkeeper Abbie Krawcyzk who handled things well until the 19th minute when sophomore Lindsey Williams fired a shot from a scrum in front of the box that got through for a 1-nil Providence lead.

The Cyclones were out shot 6-2 in the first half with the defensive back line holding the fort for the most part, turning away several good scoring chances for the Knights. The first half ended at 1-0 and things began to look much better for EHS chances in the second half with junior striker Izzy Lewis getting a pair of corner kicks that offered a chance at a goal but both were turned away by the Providence defense.

“This was not the outcome we wanted but I feel like there will be better outcomes in the future,” Meier said. “Providence is a strong team and they have good players.”

EHS (0-1) missed a scoring chance in the second half when Lewis struck a corner kick that fellow junior Camdyn Garland attempted to head into the goal but her shot was blocked by Caydee Hogan. Shortly thereafter Williams struck again with a left footed goal in the 61st minute that was partly shielded by players crossing in the box.

Minutes later a free kick from sophomore Maddix Morton nearly got the Cyclones on the board when her high shot was punched over the top crossbar by Hogan. In the 75th minute Providence scored on a short breakaway and freshman Hayden MacDonald was able to beat Krawcyzk for the final tally of the match.
