JOHNSON CITY — Johnson City has been chosen as the site for MD Carts’ new manufacturing facility, a project representing a more than $14 million investment by LPI Inc. The facility is expected to bring at least 225 new jobs to the area within the next five years.
Alicia Summers, Johnson City Economic Development Director, emphasized the importance of partnerships between private industry and regional organizations in securing the investment.
“Support from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, Tennessee Valley Authority, and the City of Johnson City make investing here profitable for the manufacturer,” Summers said. “This investment will have a significant impact on the economic health and vitality of our community. MD Carts will employ a skilled workforce by offering quality jobs and paying competitive wages. That is a win-win for the community.”
MD Carts, along with its sister company LPI Inc., now boasts over 750,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Johnson City, with its newest acquisition on Eddie Williams Road. The facility will produce specialty recreational carts, blending function with style and sophistication, aimed at transforming the vehicle from practical to leisurely. The products will be sold directly to consumers at more than 80 retail locations across the U.S. and online at GolfCarts.com.
“This is wonderful news for our community,” said Johnson City Mayor Todd Fowler. “For years, LPI has manufactured quality spas and shipped them from Johnson City to commercial partners across the United States. We are excited to see their new company expand its production of world-class products here in Johnson City.”
David Hatley, CEO of MD Carts, expressed enthusiasm about the new venture. “Johnson City and the State of Tennessee have been vital in LPI’s path of becoming the largest hot tub manufacturer in the USA,” Hatley said. “We are now looking forward to creating the same rapid growth in our new EV golf cart manufacturing business. The employee base and advantages Johnson City offers are second to none in our eyes, and we are thankful to be a part of it.”
Washington County Mayor Joe Grandy also highlighted the significance of the investment. “The selection of Johnson City as the location for MD Carts’ new manufacturing facility is a testament to our region’s strong economic foundations and collaborative spirit,” Grandy said. “This significant investment not only brings valuable jobs to our community but also reinforces the role of Washington County as a key player in the manufacturing sector. We look forward to supporting MD Carts and LPI Inc. as they continue to thrive and contribute to our local economy.”
Production at the new Johnson City facility began in March 2024. For more information about MD Carts or employment opportunities, visit GolfCarts.com or MD-Carts.com.
