Traditional Campfire Stories
Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park will feature an evening of traditional campfire stories Friday, Aug. 23, from 7 to 8 p.m. inside Fort Watauga.
Host for the evening is Park Ranger Taylor Moorefield. Stories will range from Cherokee legends to Appalachian folklore and beyond. There will be a bit of humor, wisdom, and maybe a spook or two in these traditional stories.
Bench seating is available, or you may bring your own chair.
The cost is $10 for adults, $7 for children ages 6-7, and free for children ages 5 and under.
Benefit Ride for Stoney Creek VFD
A benefit motorcycle ride for the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, with kickstands up at 11 a.m. Registration is at 9:30 a.m.
The benefit ride is being hosted by the fire department and Appalachian Warriors. Proceeds will be used to outfit the department’s Tanker 2 truck with new equipment and supplies.
There will be live music and food following the ride.
The ride will start and end at Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department – Station 2.
You don’t have to have a bike to attend. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the music and fellowship.
SlagleFest 2024 planned Sept. 7
SlagleFest 2024 is planned for Saturday, Sept. 7, from 12 noon to 10 p.m. at the Yoga Farm, 265 Slagle Road.
The Fourth Annual Festival will feature a full day of live music, local artists, and food.
Music will be moved to the barn this year. Art vendors are still being accepted.
Among the featured groups will be Anthony Childress, Pixel Vision, the A-Team, the Hired Guns, Just Chuck, Wrong Way Street, and Roxanne & the Big Bad Buzz.
Tickets are $15 advance and $20 day of events.
The festival is a stone’s throw from the original “Slagle’s Pasture” that for decades hosted yearly bluegrass festivals. These are still remembered throughout the region as the place to be yearly for bluegrass. The plan is to grow SlagleFest year over year to bring back this opportunity for the local community.
Makers Market scheduled Aug. 18
Makers Market will be held Sunday, Aug. 18, from noon to 5 p.m. at 411 E. Doe Ave.
The market will provide an opportunity to shop directly from local artists, crafters, and makers in the community.
Me&K’s Food Truck will be on site with fresh southwestern fare, and Mulberry Mobile Nursery will have an assortment of native plants and flowers available.
Rockin’ On The Doe Covered Bridge Jam
Rockin’ On the Doe August 24 will feature On The Border – The Ultimate Eagles Tribute Band. Music begins at 5 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m.
This FREE concert will take place on E. Elk Ave. in front of the Monument (just in front of Covered Bridge Park entrance) as streets will be closed and those attending can rock all night to the Eagles best hits! Bring a lawn chair and join in for a great night of rock!
Saturday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m., the Covered Bridge Jams will feature Victor Lawson and Boogie Chillen in Elizabethton.
August 31 will feature the Dimestore Cowboys at 7 p.m.
