Inmate found unresponsive at Carter County Detention Center pronounced dead

An inmate at the Carter County Detention Center was pronounced dead at a local hospital Saturday night.
Shortly before 10 p.m., an officer conducting life safety checks in a men’s housing block was alerted by an inmate that his cellmate was unresponsive. The officer entered the cell and found the inmate sitting on the floor without a pulse. The officer called for medical personnel and began administering CPR until emergency medical responders arrived.
The Carter County Emergency and Rescue Squad transported the inmate to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The cause of death is under investigation, pending the results of an autopsy. At this time, there is no indication of foul play.
The name of the deceased is not being released at this time.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been notified of the inmate’s death.
