Bassett turns Roan Groan victory into overall 2024 Omnium title

After a weekend of grueling racing, Knoxville’s Stephen Bassett took the top spot on the podium as the champion of the 2024 Carter County Omnium sponsored by Eastman Credit Union.

Bassett finished in first place on Saturday in the Roan Groan and followed that up on Sunday by finishing second in the Criterium race in downtown Elizabethton to earn the points needed for the title.

Jonathan Jacob from Indianapolis, IN finished in second place while Hendersonville, TN native Troy Fields finished in third.

In the Women’s Pro 1/2/3 category, Jennifer Thornton-Brooks followed in Bassett’s footsteps as the Boone, NC cyclist topped of her first-place finish in the Roan Groan into a victory for the overall Omnium title.

Debra Mine rode her way to a second-place finish for the Team Supra Bars rider hailing from Greenville, SC while Vinton, VA’s Emily Shields finished in third place. Milligan’s Samantha Clark claimed fourth.

In Women’s 4/5 competition, Christie Taylor from Charlottesville, VA finished first with New Haven, CT’s Tatum Brown claiming the second-place finish.

Other results show Asheville, NC rider Alexander Zambrana capturing first place in Masters 35+/45+ with Thomas Gibson of Asheville, NC and Brian Hill from Greenville, SC finished second and third respectively.

In Cat 3, Charlottesville, VA rider Josh Ott finished at the top of the podium with Max Chilsen from Evanston, IL and riding for Lees-McRae College claiming second. Cameron Cook of Durham, NC finished as the third-place finisher.

Cat 4 results saw Tyler Sasser of Smyrna, TN win the 2024 title while Louisville, KY resident Kevin Clark finished in second place. Alex Wiseman from Greenville, SC finished out the podium in third place.

Washington, OH native Corey Hart was the champion in the Masters 40+ category with Asheville’s Jonathan Rothwell finishing second.

Ryan Jones took top honors in the Masters 50+ event as the Huntsville, AL rider outdueled Marcus Jones from Hendersonville, NC for the title. Peter Mathern from Greenville, SC finished out the top three.

Knoxville’s Kent Bostick and Murfreesboro’s Bernard Clincke finished one-two in the Master’s 60+ category.

In the Novice Category (Cat 5) competition, local rider Thomas Ridlehuber from Bluff City was the champion. Joshua Hanson of Lynchburg, VA finished second while Noah Keel of Murfreesboro was third.
