PARIS, France – Sander Gille and doubles partner Joran Vliegen picked up a straight set winner in round two of the men’s doubles tournament on Sunday at the French Open. The Belgian duo defeated John Peers and Roman Safiullin, 6-4, 6-4, on the clay at Roland Garros. 

 Gille/Vliegen completed the match in one hour and twenty-three minutes as they jumped out to a big lead in the opening set and finally broke serve late in the second to complete the win. The Belgian duo only committed one double fault to their opponent’s seven, while Gille/Vliegen won nearly 70 percent on their second serve capturing 13 points on 19 chances.

 In the opening set, Gille/Vliegen broke serve in the first game and stormed out to a 4-0 lead before holding on for the 6-4 victory. In the second set, play was tight until Gille/Vliegen won the final three games to finish off the match in straight sets.

 Gille/Vliegen now take on Harri Heliovaara (Finland) and Henry Patten (Great Britain) in third round play today.

 Gille, the 2010 ASUN Player of the Year, helped guide ETSU to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2009-12. The Buccaneer alum was a three-time first team all-ASUN selection. To go with his Player of the Year honor in 2010, Gille was also named ASUN Tournament MVP. Gille finished his collegiate career with 72 wins in the Blue & Gold.
