The Elizabethton Track and Field team continued to establish personal bests by the athletes, with a pair walking away with medals and a new school record from the Hardin Valley Invitational on Saturday in Knoxville.
With a total of 49 teams participating, the Cyclones knew the competition would be stiff, with several talented athletes from other schools in the field.
In field events, junior Landry Buckles, coming off a state championship in the 2023 season in the discus, continued to raise the bar as he set a new school record of 171 feet 11 inches, surpassing his previous mark set last May at the state competition. Buckles ultimately aims for a throw of 200 feet. He earned second place for the toss, medaling behind an athlete from the private school Webb School of Knoxville.
Freshman Liahna Nave captured a third-place finish in the girls’ discus with a throw of 119 feet 11 inches. Nave was the only Lady Cyclone to medal on the day. She had previously tossed 121 feet at the Patriot Preview earlier in the season.
Other Cyclone athletes who finished in the top five of their events were:
- Jamira Smalls finished fifth with a toss of 32 feet 8 inches in the girls’ shotput.
- Diesel Russell secured a fifth-place finish in the discus with a personal best of 149 feet 8 inches.
- Jeremy Norris finished fifth in the boys’ 400-meter dash running a time of 51.52 against a class of very talented athletes.
“We knew we were going to see tough competition, so one of the main goals for a meet like this is to see ourselves set new Personal Records,” said Cyclone track coach Matthew Campbell.
A list of personal records set on the day includes:
- Chyanne Everett, 200-meter dash with a time of 27.84
