Eugene “Gene” Carrier, 86, of Elizabethton, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024, at his home. Gene was born in Carter County to the late Benfield and Medora Estep Carrier. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Maude Asher Carrier; his son, Brian Keith Carrier; his grandson, Mitchell Estep; three brothers, Dennis Carrier, Vaughn Carrier and Dallas Carrier; his sister, Lennis Taylor; and a special aunt, Eva Carrier.

 

Gene was a carpenter his entire life, starting at the age of 13 helping his dad. He made beautiful furniture and could do almost anything in carpentry. Gene was a member of Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church and loved to hunt and fish. Gene was an honorable man and stuck by his word. He was honest and dependable and would tell the truth even if it hurt sometimes.

 

Gene had a lot of friends in Michigan that he fished with and he would sometimes go out West on Elk hunting trips. Most of all, Gene loved his family, his wife, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spending his time making memories with them was his favorite thing to do.

 

Those left to cherish Gene’s memory include his wife, Tresea Scalf; his children, Jennifer Estep and Debbie Perry and husband Dennis, all of Elizabethton; his step-children, James Scalf Jr. of Hampton, Kevin Scalf and wife Heather of Elizabethton, Lisa Julian and husband Eddie of Roan Mountain, and Carrie Miller and husband Tim of Hampton; his grandchildren, Maverick Estep, Melanie Curd and husband Ryan, Malarie Guinn and husband Josh, Macie Odom and husband Chad, Dustin Perry and wife Tabby, Medora Perry and husband Justin and Clifford Carrier; his step-grandchildren, Sara Julian, Elizabeth and Victoria Scalf, Timmy and Andrew Miller; his great-grandchildren, Aly, Lillie, Ian, Ridge, Karlee, Elijah, Knox, Cade, Dallas, Addison, Conner, Payzli, Rory, Waylon and Trevor; his step-great-grandchild, Jayme Rouse; three brothers, Ronnie Carrier, Joe Carrier and Benny Carrier, all of Elizabethton; one sister, Cleta “Chum” Lingerfelt of Elizabethton; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Carrier Nidiffer; and a sister-in-law, Irene Carrier. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

A service to celebrate Gene’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Rev. Charlie Trivette and Pastor Lester Perkins officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service. The family will also receive friends at the residence at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, in the Garland Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church, Gene’s special friends that he bear hunted and fished with and his Michigan friends. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Thursday to go in procession.
