Iron your kilt and don’t skip leg day. Northeast State Community College hosts a Highland Games Clinic on Saturday, April 13, with feats of strength and grappling demonstrations in traditional Scottish culture.
The clinic takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Upper Quad of Northeast State’s Blountville campus, Highway 75 next to Tri-Cities Airport. Registration is $15 and includes lunch and a sporty T-shirt.
The College’s International Education Program sponsors this event in conjunction with the Appalachian Highland Celts and Everblade Academy. The clinic will feature the following competitive activities: caber toss, hammer throw, open stone, Scottish back-hold wrestling, sheaf toss, weight for distance and weight over bar. Participants get the lowdown on the history of the highland games, sport techniques and prizes will play for prizes and are encouraged to wear kilts or comfortable shorts.
In addition to Scottish-inspired games and competitions, event-goers will have the opportunity to watch and learn traditional European wrestling from experts. The College welcomes students and the public to the all-day event. The deadline to register is Friday, March 29, and a release form will be required for participation.
