Shane Simerly wins Republican Primary for Carter County Assessor of Property

Shane Simerly emerged victorious in the Carter County Republican Primary for assessor of property, securing 65 percent of the vote. 

Simerly, an employee of the office with 11-1/2 years of experience, defeated State Rep. John Holsclaw.  Simerly will be on the August General Election ballot for the assessor’s position, which is being vacated by current officeholder Ronnie Taylor. Taylor did not seek re-election.

In the constable’s race for the 2nd district, Michael E. Mason, appointed constable by the Carter County Commission in July 2023, ran unopposed as the Republican candidate.

Candidates for the Carter County School Board were also on the primary ballot, with Nancy R. Lewis winning the Republican nomination for the Sixth District position. Incumbents Keith Bowers Sr., Danny Ward, and Dylan Hill ran unopposed in their respective districts. In the County Commission Race for the Sixth District, incumbent Jason Edward Clawson emerged victorious over challenger Brian Lane Keener for the Republican nomination.

For the position of Superintendent of Roads in Carter County, Shannon R. Burchett, appointed by the Carter County Commission in August 2023, ran uncontested as the Republican candidate. Burchett assumed the role after Roger Colbaugh’s retirement announcement. No Democratic or Independent candidates qualified for the position.

The primary election took place Tuesday in Carter County.
