“I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny. But we can have lots of good fun that is funny!” – “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss

Although Saturday began with light rain and fog, by the afternoon, the skies began to clear at Covered Bridge Park as young and old gathered for the second annual Seuss on the Loose. The event, a partnership with Parks & Recreation, the Public Library, and Main Street, aimed to promote reading and provide fun activities for the community.

Participants received a “Sneetch Sheet” upon arrival, listing 10 businesses engaging in activities and readings, offering stamps to fill up their sneetch card. After collecting stamps, families returned to Covered Bridge Park, where additional organizations and vendors awaited, providing goodies upon completion of their sheets.

A total of 600 sneetch cards were printed, all distributed to eager participants. Many attendees expressed surprise at discovering downtown businesses they hadn’t known about before, pleased to meet business owners and explore new shopping destinations.

Participating businesses included Carter County Bank, Boomtown & Co., Pioneer Tattoo Co., Simple Blessing General Store, The Curious Moon Apothecary, The Peddler’s Cart, and Tweetsie Trailing. Community partners included Carter County Drug Prevention Coalition, Elizabethton River Riders, Northeast Community Credit Union, Shafer Insurance Agency, and State of Franklin Healthcare Associates.

Completed cards entered participants into a prize drawing at the event’s end. Goodies available included funnel cakes, fried Oreo cookies, freshly popped popcorn, and oven-fired pizza.
