The Senate passed legislation Monday regarding school fire alarm procedures that supporters say will add important safety measures in Tennessee. The bill has already been approved in the House and will now be sent to the Governor’s desk. House Majority Leader Lamberth and Senate Speaker Pro Tempore Haile sponsored the legislation. 

The Bill requires schools to develop protocols for determining the cause of a fire alarm activation to reduce the exposure of students and staff to threats like active shooters. This bill addresses concerns stemming from the March 2023 Covenant School shooting. Leader Lamberth in his comments on the House floor said that ideally schools would have separate alarms to identify the type of emergency and protect students and teachers. Wearable, silent panic alarms satisfy these new requirements.
