Marking the official end of the football season, The Salvation Army’s ‘Souper Bowl for the Hungry’ event will be held on Friday, Feb. 16, at the Holiday Inn at 101 W. Springbrook Drive in Johnson City. This luncheon, an annual affair for more than a quarter century, has become a premiere event in the region, hosting a sell-out crowd each February.
The Souper Bowl always features a well-known and accomplished football figure. Past speakers at this event include Archie Manning, Bart Starr, Gayle Sayers, and Ron Jaworski, just to name a few. There will be a press conference at 11:20 a.m. at the Holiday Inn (Clement Room) on February 16, and members of the media are invited to attend.
This year’s speaker is former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher. Coach Fisher is a household name to many Tennesseans as he served as the head coach of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans/Oilers from 1994 to 2010. Coach Fisher led the Titans to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIV after the 1999 season, where the team came up one yard short of scoring the winning touchdown as time expired, falling to the St. Louis Rams by a score of 23-16. Combining his wins as head coach of the Titans and later the Rams, Fisher has the 12th most wins of all coaches in NFL history.
Proceeds from this event will go toward the year-round mission of The Salvation Army in Johnson City, funding things like its emergency and veterans’ shelter, food pantry, emergency financial assistance, and youth programs.
