Hampton sweeps past Longhorns in conference clash

Late in the third quarter of Saturday’s conference clash between Johnson County and Hampton at Van Huss/White gymnasium the Longhorns took a 36-35 lead after Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith was hit with a technical foul.
From there, the Bulldogs ran off 23 consecutive points to roll to a 58-36 lead en route to a 65-43 victory. On the girls side the Lady Bulldogs took a 26-6 first period lead and took an easy 68-23 win over the Lady Longhorns.
Hampton (10-9 overall, 3-1 conference) ran off seven straight points to end the third period with a 43-37 lead and scored the first 16 points of the fourth period to effectively take a big lead.
Senior post Hayden Campbell scored a game high 28 points with 10 rebounds with Geno Carrico adding 17.
“We backed up our press defense in the second half,” Campbell said. “And it really changed the flow of the game. I have been working with coach (Mike) Matheson on free throw shooting and I think we are getting back to our chemistry as a team. We have had some injuries – nothing major but nagging things – and we are starting to get over that.”
The Longhorns ( ) kept the game close through most of the contest trailing 26-21 at the halftime break with post Darren Chappell scoring 10 of his 12 points in the first half. In the third quarter Carson Jennings connected on a trey to make it a 35-34 game and Smith collected his technical foul.
Jennings hit both free throws for a 36-35 Johnson County lead but that ignited a scoring binge for the Bulldogs that ended in the fourth period on a pair of free throws from Eli Dickens.
“It was nip and tuck for a while there,” Smith said. “We responded in the second half and got it going on defense. We shared the ball well and played super defense.”

The Lady Bulldogs played solid defense, especially in the lane where the Lady Longhorns looked to attack offensively. Hampton ( ) held Johnson County ( ) to single digit scoring in each quarter and guard Brea Hicks scored a game high 17 points.
“The girls played really hard and we locked in our game plan,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Dewayne Humphrey said. “We made sure that when Johnson County missed a shot that it was one and done. Brea works hard and she attacked the basket tonight.”
The Lady ‘Dogs led 26-6 after one period and extended to a 45-10 halftime lead and was never threatened from there. Faye Carrico added 12 points and post Taylor Berry had nine points.
For Johnson County, Desire Robinson scored six points with Sierra Green and Mimi Zalvidar each scoring five.
