STAR CORRESPONDENT
On Tuesday night at Van Huss / White gymnasium the Hampton Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs each scored conference wins over visiting Happy Valley. Senior Geno Carrico had a career high 19 points as the Bulldogs (9-8 overall, 2-1 conference) took a 79-30 win while senior post Taylor Berry connected on five triples as the Lady ‘Dogs took an easy 59-31 win.
“Coach always talks about hitting the boards and getting put backs,” Carrico said. “Tonight we had good ball pressure and we rooted it out. Our goal is defensive pressure and we applied that tonight.”
Hampton took a 27-2 first quarter advantage with Carrico scoring 10 points with three offensive rebound put backs and the ‘Dogs stretched their lead to 46-14 at the half. Senior post Hayden Campbell scored 18 points – with 10 coming in the fourth quarter.
For Happy Valley (5-13, 1-2) A.J. Campbell led the way with nine points with Artie Bahn adding six while freshman star Darian Jackson was frustrated by being held scoreless and had six turnovers on several errant long passes.
“Our defensive pressure turned our offense on,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “Geno played well and got a game high 19 points. We had balanced scoring and Hayden had a big game and we got a lot of good minutes from the bench. They played real well.”

Berry scored a game high 19 points – getting her shooting touch back with five treys – in leading the Lady Bulldogs to the win.
“It was good to see her shoot like she did,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Humphrey said. “She was a point shy of 20. Something we have been working on since we played Unicoi County was stopping the ball defensively and closing out on shooters. We had good defensive intensity tonight.”
The Lady ‘Dogs (9-9, 2-1) opened with a 21-4 first quarter and had a 37-10 halftime advantage and were never threatened. Faye Carrico had 12 points to back Berry in the Hampton scoring ledger with Brea Hicks scoring eight points and Hannah Smith adding seven points.
For Happy Valley (7-6, 0-3) senior guard Marcida Moore had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds with Kayla Parker scoring five points.
