With the first day of 2024 in the rearview mirror, basketball teams throughout the area were ready to get back to work and the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones junior varsity was one of those teams as the Lady Cyclones welcomed the Dobyns-Bennett Lady Indians JV team to John Treadway Gym on Tuesday evening.
Playing with an empty bench to back up the five starters, the Lady Cyclone JV team was facing dire odds before the opening tip and managed to finish the game with only four players in a 53-29 loss to the visitors from Kingsport.
Despite being behind the eight-ball from the opening tip, the difference in the contest came down to a barrage of treys from the Lady Indians that was the decisive factor in the contest as Coach Melenda Egolf’s team competed to the final horn.
Maliyah Brown’s nine points helped to set the pace in the opening half as D-B built a 31-12 advantage. Ariana Thomas pitched in with six points as the Lady Indians connected on five treys in the first 16 minutes of action.
Reagan May had a pair of treys in the first quarter to lead the Lady Cyclones. Maci Reed, Adrian Heading, and Caylie Tester each added a deuce apiece.
The Lady Cyclones continued to fight in the second half despite Reed fouling out early in the fourth quarter leaving only four Elizabethton players on the court to finish the game.
The rim wasn’t kind to the home team either as several shots had the opportunity to fall but ultimately rolled out making a comeback that much more difficult.
Brown finished with a game-high 13 to lead the Lady Indians while Thomas collected double figures with 11 points. Janie Graham chipped in with eight points. D-B had eight players score at least three points each in the contest.
May finished with 11 points to lead the Lady Cyclones in the loss. Jasy Shell connected for seven points as well for Elizabethton.
Heading collected five points with Tester and Reed finishing with four and two points respectively.
