Cyclones cross country captures fourth in state, Lady Cyclones 11th

The Elizabethton cross country team wrapped up an amazing 2023 season in Hendersonville as the Cyclone boys finished in fourth place while the girls culminated their season with an 11th-place finish.
Setting many personal records in their race, the Cyclone boys were paced by school-record holder Riley Vernon who finished a stellar senior season by medaling at 12th place while cutting nine seconds off his initial record time of 16:43, which he set during the Cherokee Classic in Knoxville on September 23 to a new record of 16:34.
Max Garner claimed 24th place in a time of 17:05.12, while Jerry Behrmann was the third Cyclone to cross the finish line with a time of 17:24.88 – good enough for 40th place overall.
Copper Chinault brought home a 59th-place finish running a time of 17:37.83, with teammate Cooper Jack legging a time of 17:54.62 in 80th place. Brian Presley and William Snodgrass closed out the race for the Cyclones finishing 90th and 109th, respectively.
Signal Mountain claimed the team championship as runners finished in second, seventh, eighth, 18th, and 20th to record a score of 55. Central Magnet School was the second-place finisher, while Station Camp claimed the third spot just ahead of the Cyclones.
Memphis East, Anderson County, Martin Luther King, and Camden Central finished fifth through eighth behind Elizabethton.
The Elizabethton girls shaved 11 spots off their 22nd-place finish last season as several personal records helped lead the team to their 11th-place finish.
Helen Hackett paced the girls as she claimed a 34th place finish in a time of 20:41.84, while teammates Madeline Isaacs and Jasey Hyatt crossed in 60th and 61st place, respectively, with times of 21:47.31 and 21:49.03.
Ashleigh Hyatt brought home a 110th-place finish, with Grace Artz (146th), Adrian Heading (149th), and Amberlin Grindstaff (200th) rounding out the meet for the Lady Cyclones.
Signal Mountain captured the girls’ Class A-AA state championship. David Crockett finished in fourth place, while the Lady Cyclones fell in behind Hume Fogg Academic Magnet (7), Tullahoma (8), Obion Co. Central (9). and Anderson Co. (10).
Volunteer High came in with a 12th place finish as three local schools finished in the top 12 in the state for girls.
