At Roan Mountain we house, care for, and educate the public on a variety of native animals. We work under an educational permit from TWRA. Currently, we care for three birds of prey and several snakes! As you can imagine, caring for these animals is costly, as their food and health care is a specialty!

All of our animals are non-releasable for a variety of reasons. We frequently program with these animals and never charge for educational programs when using them. Here is your opportunity to support our educational wildlife program and help us care for these animals!

All donations will go to purchase food, pay vet bills, purchase gloves, tethers, falconry equipment, aquarium bedding, and to improve and build more housing facilities for our non-releasable birds of prey.

September 16
Peg Leg Mine GeoVenture – 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Meet at the Visitor Center Porch. Price is $10 and register for the event. From 1-3PM on Saturday, September 16th, join Park Ranger Phil Hylen for a geology adventure into the hills behind the Visitor Center for a deep exploration of the rock formations and mining history of Roan Mountain. Participants will meet their host at the Visitor Center porch before setting off on a 1-mile moderate difficulty hike along the Peg Leg Mine Loop Trail to explore the old iron mine and unique rock formations leading to it. Each guest will then open and keep their own node of iron ore or geode.
This program is limited to 12 participants at a cost of $10.00 per person. Good hiking shoes are recommended for the 1-mile natural-terrain walk. This program will begin and end at the Visitor Center.

Primitive Cooking – Fruit and Vegetables – 3 p.m. Price is $5/Ages 12 and under, $8/Person. Register for the event. Join Ranger Holland as we have fun using primitive cooking methods to prepare various fruits and vegetables around the campfire. We will explore simple steaming, roasting and baking in the coals with minimal utensils. Meet at Shed #3.

September 17
Snakes of Roan Mountain – 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Meet at the Visitor Center Porch. On Sunday, September 17th, join Park Ranger Phil Hylen and our snake ambassadors at the Visitor Center Porch from 2:00 – 3:00PM to learn about the unique types of snakes found in and around Roan Mountain. Aside from doing many jobs, much like humans, these secretive creatures often leave people with thousands of questions about their lives, myths, and our fears. Come and learn while also meeting a few of our ambassador snakes.
There is no registration for this program. Please join us on the porch rocking chairs for a relaxed sit and learn activity.

Septemer 23
Tomahawk Toss – 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Price is $5 and register for the event. Learn to throw a tomahawk!. Join Ranger Holland as we have fun learning a popular frontier pastime.
Tomahawks provided. No previous Tomahawk-throwing experience is required to enjoy this fun program. Meet at Shed #3.

September 24
Riverside Autumn Tree Hike – 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Meet at the Campground Check-In Station Porch. $0/Free Participant Registration, $10/Participant + $10 Park Donation, $20/Participant +$20 Park Donation. Register for the event. Join Park Ranger Phil Hylen on Sunday, September 24th at the Campground Check-in Station porch from 2:00 – 4:00PM for a 1.1-mile loop walk along the Riverside Trail and through the campground. Aside from enjoying the gorgeious early views of the Fall leaf change, Ranger Phil will guide guests through some basic tree identification skills and some really interesting commentary on some of our more showy early fall color trees.
This free hike is limited to 15 people, so be sure to register your spot today! Registration with donation options also exist to help our park afford trail structures, public program equipment, and for other amazing upgrades to your favorite park facilities.
