Hazel Irene Snyder Bunten, 80 years old, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at her home in Elizabethton, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born on July 22, 1943 in Clarke County in Springfield, Ohio to the late Clyde Alkire and Naomia Estella Watson Snyder.
Hazel enjoyed her flowers, church, cookouts and cooking for her family. She had been employed with Woodridge Hospital in the Medical Records Department and had also worked at Dino’s Restaurant.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Rosetta Marie Keister, Mildred Caldwell and Bonnie Hartley; a sister-in-law, Judy Birchfield Kuhn; and a great-grandson, Cody Miller.
Survivors include four sons, Timothy (Angela) Bunten, Jeffrey Bunten, Bryan (Robin) Bunten and Roger Bunten Jr., all of Elizabethton, Tenn.; two daughters, Tammi (Jim) Colbaugh and Tawnya (Jason) Branch, both of Elizabethton, Tenn.; 41 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Emma Jean Bailey of Delaware, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Bill Kuhn of Elizabethton, Tenn.; two very special sons she thought of as her own, Sid (Eve) Johnson and Eric Johnson of Bluff City, Tenn.; a special niece, Debbie Reynolds of Delaware, Ohio; and her best friend, Donna Gardina of Ocala, Fla. Several nieces, nephews and her extended family, the Bunten family, also survive.
A celebration of Hazel’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service, or at the home of a daughter and son-in-law, Tammi (Jim) Colbaugh.
The committal and entombment will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 13, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jacob Tweitmann, Hunter Stevens, Jordun Burchett, Matt Bunten, Justin Porch, Nick Porch, TJ Bunten, Bryan Bunten, Cody Bunten, Isaac Bunten, Logan Bunten and Dilan Bunten. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
