Virginia Christeen Swain, 86, Elizabethton, went to be with Jesus on August 19, 2023, from an extended illness. She was born in Carter County to the late Frank May Sr. and Hester Jane Peters May and was a long-term resident of Ivy Hall Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Swain, who passed in October of 2019, and three sisters, Mary Oliver, Betty Jo Arnold and Charlotte Smith.
Virginia was a member of Harmony Baptist Church.
She is survived by three children, Jim May (Claudia) of Elizabethton Tenn., Becky Dawes (Jerrid) of New Ellenton, S.C., and Joanna Holt (Carlos) of San Antonio, Texas. She has five grandchildren, Penny Campbell, Whitney Davis, Amanda Reed (Matthew), Kennedy and Hayden Holt; two great-grandchildren, Lainee and Jude Bartlett; two sisters, Helen Ruth Pilk and Bonnie Carr, both of Elizabethton; two brothers, James Alvin May and Frank May Jr., both of Elizabethton; and several nieces and nephews.
Virginia or Christeen as most of her family and friends know her worked at daycares later in her life. She loved caring for the “littles.” Before she and her husband became homebound, they loved to take road trips and visit family. She always cared about others more than herself.
A Service to Celebrate the Life of Virginia Christeen Swain will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 24, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Matt Swain officiating. Music will be provided by Chris and Tonia Hughes. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. A special thanks to the staff of CNAs, nurses and administration of Ivy Hall Nursing Home for their dedicated care and how they made our moma feel special. In lieu of flowers please donate to one of the following charities in her and JC’s name: American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and St. Jude Hospital or the Shriners.
