A high school athlete has four years to fulfill all their academic and athletic dreams. Some will take the fullest advantage of those opportunities and some will not.
Then you have those athletes who have to pay their dues, waiting for the time that comes when the player that is ahead of them in a particular position runs out of eligibility and if they are smart, they will learn all they can in the meantime.
Landon Ramsey was a standout quarterback for his four seasons as an Unaka Ranger, earning all-state honors during that time while leading his team to home playoff contests the last two seasons.
Now Ramsey is an alumni and there is new blood that has been studying and watching awaiting his shot at calling the signals for the Rangers.
Rising junior Brynin Repass has been taking snaps as Ramsey’s backup for the past two seasons and now will be looked to in leading his offensive unit from under center.
“I am going to bring leadership and bring in a role of just getting these guys here to make sure that we are working together as a unit,” said Repass. “I am going to try to run our offense to the best ability that I can.”
Repass has played behind Ramsey for three seasons as a backup and there is no denying that he will have some giant shoes to fill, but it is a challenge that he stated that he is prepared to accept and is eager to do so.
“I have had high expectations from this offseason going into a new season,” said Repass. “I think that we can win the district title this year and make some real school history to set the standard for where Unaka football should be. I think everyone has the same outlook moving forward.”
The junior also realizes there will be challenges that he and his teammates will be facing, one of those being a team that carries a small roster of players forcing most to have to play both ways during a game.
“The biggest challenge will be getting everyone to work together,” Repass said. “The same 11 guys will be rotating in and out on offense and defense, so if our minds are not all focused, we will fall apart.”
Repass and his Ranger teammates will get things underway at 7:30 pm on Friday, Sept. 1, at Goddard Field when the Titans from Twin Springs, VA, make the trip across the state line for the season opener.
