Ernest Crumley, 99, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center. Ernest was born in Johnson City to the late Jess and Susie Fields Crumley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Hughes Crumley; a half sister, Mary Roberts; and two half brothers, Paul and Fred Crumley.
Ernest loved the Lord and always looked for and saw the good in people. Those who knew him well, knew him as “Honey in the Rock” or “Speck.” He was a mechanic for Leach Motors for many years and a member of Sunset Free Will Baptist Church in Roan Mountain. Ernest loved singing in church and playing the banjo and played for many churches through the years. In his spare time, he enjoyed going fishing.
Those left to cherish Ernest’s memory include two sons, Roger Crumley of Elizabethton and Ricky (Pamela) Crumley of Roan Mountain; two daughters, Cathy (Earnest) Crenshaw of Bellmont, N.C., and Cindy Shatley Shortt of Piney Flats; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A service to honor and celebrate Ernest’s life will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 1, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Pastor Randy English officiating and Pastor Terry Richardson assisting in the service. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 6:30 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service.
The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 2, in the Taylor’s Chapel Cemetery in Elk Park, N.C. Active pallbearers will be Casey Shatley, Ethan Hughes, Brad Crumley, Wes Crumley, Gary Short and Lee Bullard. Earnest Crenshaw will serve as honorary pallbearer. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton at 9:45 a.m. Sunday to go in procession. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations in Ernest’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. The family wishes to especially thank the staff at Hillview Health and Rehabilitation in Elizabethton for their kindness and exceptional care given to Ernest during his illness.
