For the second straight night, the River Riders would rally late and for the second straight night, they would come up short. The River Riders fell to the Kingsport Axmen on Wednesday night 11-9. The game was all Axmen early as they would jump out early and score often; they would put up four in the second inning, four in the third and two in the fifth inning, jumping out to a 10-2 lead. The River Riders would not go quietly in the Kingsport night as they would start to jump on Axmen pitching in the seventh inning scoring six runs in total and grabbing momentum, making it a one-run game 10-9. Skylar King would provide a key hit in the frame as he would stroke a two-strike pitch to deep center for a double, plating two runs.
This would be as close as the River Riders would get, though, as the Axmen would pick up an insurance run in the eighth inning off a triple to push the lead back to two and then go down quietly in the final inning. Skylar King would finish the night with three hits and first baseman DJ Dilehay would also get three hits and pick up three RBIs on the night. Matty White would also grab three RBIs while going 2 for 4. The Elizabethton squad would collect 11 hits on the night. Sean Holister would take the loss, surrendering six runs and seven hits over 3.0 innings. Axmen third baseman Logan Sutton would go 3-4 on the night with two RBIs. The ETSU product would hit a monstrous homerun that hit off the top of the left field foul pole in the fourth inning.
The River Riders will host the Bluefield Ridge Runner in the first of a two game set with a scheduled first pitch time of 5:30 tonight.
